Australasian Society of Career Medical Officers

Welcome to ASCMO

We’re updating this site’s overall look and feel

Over time, the style of this site is being modified to make it more readable and accessible for future users. Please bear with us during this transition period as the new design steadily replaces the previous version. We hope you enjoy this fresh, clean look.

After almost 30 years of advocacy, ASCMO has now closed down as an organisation, with this website moving into an Archival format.

The Australasian Society of Career Medical Officers (ASCMO) has been a non-profit organisation. Our society began as the Career Medical Officers Association (CMOA) in 1996, and continued to be administered on a voluntary basis by Career Medical Officers (CMOs). Membership Fees were nominal (more info). View our founding objectives. Our activities remain documented in past CMO Bulletins.

Over recent years, and after long contribution, the more active members of ASCMO have moved into various phases of withdrawal and/or retirement. In addition various organisations have offered to represent CMOs. No new members have arisen willing to assume those leadership roles. Consequently ASCMO held a meeting in 2024, where it was agreed that without an ongoing influx of engaged CMOs, ASCMO should wind up its current obligations and donate any remaining funds to relevant organisations that have a track record of advocacy for CMOs. This process was completed on 7 March 2025, with a final donation made to NSW ASMOF. Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation

ASCMO arose from a recognised need for CMOs to actively represent themselves in the health system. ASCMO sought to ensure that CMOs are properly recognised for the significant contribution we continue to make to the healthcare of all Australasians. To allow future CMOs to access a record of the efforts of their predecessors, ASCMO's website is now moving into an Archival format.

ASCMO's Committee wishes to acknowledge the enormous efforts of so many CMOs who for almost 3 decades have tirelessly advocated and advanced industrial and educational issues on behalf of this important sector within the Medical Workforce.
